A video is being widely shared on social media claiming it to be of Cyclone Shaheen which struck the Oman coast on October 3, 2021. Cyclone Shaheen is an extension of cyclone Gulab that originated in the Bay of Bengal on September 24, 2021.

The video is being shared on Facebook with a caption in Arabic that translates to, “Hurricane Shaheen. Off the coast of the Sultanate of Oman. May Allah protect the people of Oman and those who live on its land.”

(Original Text: إعصار شاهين، قبالة سواحل سلطنة عُمان. اللهم احفظ أهل عُمان، والمقيمين على أرضها.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

We extracted keyframes from the video and performed a Google Reverse Image Search, which did not yield any positive results. Then we performed Yandex Reverse Image Search and after extensive searching, we found a YouTube video uploaded on November 23, 2019, that featured the same viral video with the description, “Pakistan Balochistan Gawader.” This clearly means that the video is not recent and thus, cannot be related to Cyclone Shaheen in Oman.

Below is the comparison between a screengrab from the viral video and a screengrab from the YouTube video.

Further, we also did a keyword search but could not find any recent visuals similar to that seen in the viral video.

Although NewsMobile could not independently verify the location of the viral video, but it is evident from the above information that the viral video is old and not related to Cyclone Shaheen and Oman.
