A social media post is doing the rounds claiming that anaesthesia can be life-threatening for people vaccinated against coronavirus. It goes on to suggest that vaccinated people must wait for a month to go under surgery requiring anaesthesia.

The text embedded on the image reads, “Anyone who has been vaccinated against coronavirus is prohibited from taking any type of anaesthetic, even local anaesthetics or dentist’s anaesthetics, because this poses a great danger to the life of the vaccinated person and is highly dangerous. There’s a possibility of death.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Starting with our investigation, we searched the web to check if any such warning has been issued by the Health Ministry, but could find none. No such warning has been issued by any vaccine manufacturer either. We also could not find any credible news report that confirms death of a vaccinated person due to the use of anaesthesia.

Digging further we found that the Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologists and College of Anaesthesiologists, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, has refuted the viral message and called it misleading.

In a press statement dated June 13, they said “allowing such misstatements to propagate may impact many vulnerable individuals awaiting anaesthesia for surgical procedures and their inclination for vaccination.”

More searches directed us to a tweet dated June 16 by government’s nodal information body – Press Information Bureau, in which they dubbed this claim as fake. “There is NO scientific evidence till date to confirm the claim,” reads the tweet text.

Although, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people to talk to their doctors if they are vaccinated and need to be put on anaesthesia for surgery, nowhere has it warned people against the same.

Hence, we conclude that although it is advisable to consult a doctor before taking anaesthesia for surgery, the viral claim warning vaccinated people against surgeries requiring anaesthetics is fake.
