“Fireworks of Inaugural function of Tokyo Olympics,” the Facebook post read.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

We extracted the keyframes of the video and ran them through Reverse Image Search. The search directed us to a video uploaded on YouTube on December 31, 2020. “2021 Taiwan Taipei New Year Eve Fireworks #TaiwanCanHelp,” the video title read.

Based on this, we ran a keyword search and found similar visuals of the same firework display streamed live by The Telegraph on December 31, 2020.

“Many cities on the island of Taiwan are preventing public attendance at firework displays, but in the capital of Taipei, the city government is allowing in-person attendance to its New Year’s events, as well as broadcasting them live – including fireworks set off from the outside of the iconic Taipei 101, once the world’s tallest building,” the description of the video read.

We compared the viral videos to the above YouTube videos and found that they are from the same event.

We found out that similar fireworks were also displayed during the 2020 New Year celebrations in Taiwan. The YouTube videos can be seen here and here.

Moreover, we also checked the highlights and the full video of the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony and the location of the event was evidently different. The event took place at The National Stadium of Tokyo. The full ceremony of the video can be seen here while the highlights can be seen here.

Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the viral video is an old video from Taiwan and NOT of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
