Social media is replete with a video claiming that a breathing test can be done to diagnose COVID-19. The video claims that if you can hold your breath for over 20 seconds from point A to point B without discomfort, then you don’t have COVID-19.
The post is shared on Facebook with a caption that reads, “अपने फेफड़ों और ऑक्सीजन लेवल को जांचिए”
(Translation: Check your lungs and oxygen level)
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post and found it to be fake.
We found out that a similar claim had gone viral in 2020 as well. Taking a cue from this, we found a post by WHO in which they refuted this claim stating that “Being able to hold your breath for 10 seconds or more without coughing or feeling discomfort DOES NOT mean you are free from the coronavirus disease or any other lung disease.”
Dr Faheem Younus, Vice-President and Chief of Infectious Diseases at the University of Maryland UCH, has the same opinion about the viral claim. Last year he had tweeted saying, “Most young patients with Coronavirus will be able to hold their breaths for much longer than 10 seconds. And many elderly without the virus won’t be able to do it.”
We also found a tweet by Press Information Bureau (PIB), the government’s nodal information agency, refuting the above claim and calling it ‘Fake News’.
Hence, it can be concluded that the viral video regarding a breathing test for lungs to conclude whether one is free from coronavirus or not is FAKE.
