A video is being shared on social media where a man can be seen conferring a gold medal to the contestant who came third by mistake. It is being shared with a claim that the incident happened at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020.

FACT CHECK 

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim and found that the claim is false.

We extracted the keyframes of the video and put them through Reverse Image Search. The search led us to a similar video on YouTube, uploaded in November 2019, with the title, “4k Fancam Alena Kostornaia Alena Kostornaia Victory Ceremony Internationaux de France 2019. “

Based on this, we ran a keyword search and found the viral video on YouTube, with the title, “Medal mix-up at ISU Grand Prix 2019 in Grenoble”.

Internationaux de France is an international, senior-level figure skating competition held as part of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series.

We also found a picture of the event on Wikimedia Commons, where it was shared with the description: 2019 Internationaux de France – ladies medal ceremony. The gold medal was offered to Mariah Bell (bronze) by mistake so she handed it over to Alena Kostornaia and all three, including Alina Zagitova, started laughing. The date of the picture is listed as November 2, 2019.

Several other pictures of the event were also present on the photo stock website Alamy.

Moreover, we also scanned through the latest media reports but did not find any report stating that such an incident took place at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Hence, we can say that the viral post is false.
