Two pictures of a group of people cleaning a canal are doing rounds on social media with a claim that the picture is from Arunachal Pradesh.
“Power of Unity. Let’s clean ARUNACHAL PRADESH ARUNACHAL PRADESH Together” the caption read.
NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found the claim to be misleading.
We ran a Reverse Image Search along with some keywords and found the same pictures posted on Facebook on December 15, 2020, by a Nepal based NGO, Public Environment Awareness Development Organization. The post mentioned that the picture shows a canal in Yangon, Myanmar.
“This waterway went from trashed to tranquil! A group of eco-warriors teamed up to clear garbage and other debris that’s been piling high and blocking a canal in Yangon, Myanmar. THIS is what’s possible when we work hard to let the environment breathe easy! Clean Yangon via Facebook,” the caption of the post read.
Further, we found a post on Instagram published by a California-based organisation Waste-Ed, featuring the same pictures. As per the caption, the pictures were taken in Yangon, Myanmar.
As the attribution was given to Clean Yangon, we checked the organisation’s verified Facebook page and found several pictures on their profile from the canal cleanliness drive. The caption of the pictures in Burmese can be loosely translated to, “Yangon City Development Committee and Charitable organizations; for the second time, cleaned the litter dumped in the canal in front of Thein Phyu Market. 16.2.2020.”
We also found similar pictures on the World Organization of the Scout Movement website, mentioning that the pictures show a drain in front of Thein Phyu Market, Myanmar. The website mentioned that the project was undertaken along with the Clean Yangon organisation.
The above information proves that the picture is from Myanmar, not Arunachal Pradesh. Hence, the claim is misleading.
