A screenshot of a report is being shared widely on social media with a claim that thousands of genetically modified mosquitoes inoculated with Viagra have escaped from a high-security laboratory in Wuhan, China.

Text in the post read, ‘Thousands of genetically modified mosquitoes inoculated with Viagra have potentially escaped from a high-security laboratory in Wuhan, China’.

A user shared the post with the caption, “சீனாவின் அடுத்த ஆயுதம் மரபணு மாற்றப்பட்ட கொசுவா!!”

(Translation: China’s next weapon is genetically modified mosquito!!)

We found a similar post on Facebook that, in addition, also claims that virus samples like rabies, HIV, and the Coronavirus, which are present in the Wuhan high-security laboratory, can spread amongst the escaped genetically modified mosquitoes and create a super virus.

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile checked the authenticity of the report, we found it to be FAKE.

On running a Google search along with some keywords, we found a similar post on Twitter published on June 11, 2021. The post had a link to the report in question.

The screenshot in the post was first taken from an article published on the website, World News Daily Report. The headline of the article read, “Wuhan: Thousands of mosquitoes inoculated with Viagra escape from high-security laboratory”.

However, when we scrolled through the page, we found a disclaimer stating that the article is a satire.

“World News Daily Report assumes all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content. All characters appearing in the articles in this website – even those based on real people – are entirely fictional and any resemblance between them and any person, living, dead or undead, is purely a miracle.” it read.

Further, we looked for authentic media reports to check if any such incident had taken place but could not find any report from a reliable source.

The above information proves that the report is fictional and holds no validity. Therefore, the claim is false.
