A post is going viral on social media with a claim that women should not take the COVID-19 vaccine 5 days before and after their menstrual cycle since vaccine reduces immunity which can lead to a high risk of attack.

The text on the post reads, “A reminder for all women. Vaccination is starting from May 1st for above 18, for girls it’s very important to check periods and take vaccination. Don’t take the vaccine before and after 5 days of our periods because immunity will be very less during periods. Dosage of vaccine first decreases our immunity later it builds immunity so, their is high risk of attack for one who vaccinated during periods. Share with your sister/ friend/ family/ girlfriend. Don’t feel shame to share”

Further, we found a video on Instagram published on April 23, 2021, by Dr Yuvraj Jadeja, Fertility Consultant and Fertility In-charge, Pramukhswami Medical College, Anand, Gujarat. The caption of the video read, “Vaccination for girls in periods? Ok so no explanation, just wanted to address the rumour that was going around. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CONTRAINDICATION TO TAKING THE VACCINE DURING PERIODS. Stop forwarding that msg and stop the chain. PERIOD”.

In the video, the doctor explains that there is no evidence or science that suggests against taking vaccine during periods. He further adds that the vaccine has been deemed safe for pregnant women and high-risk patients who are immunocompromised. Therefore, the vaccine is safe for women who are menstruating.

Further, we found another video by Dr Tanaya Narendra published on April 24, 2021. Tanaya is a trained doctor from the University of Oxford. She is a Millennial Doctor and a Youth Influencer on sexual health related issues.

We also found a tweet by Press Information Bureau (PIB), government’s nodal information agency, stating that social media posts circulating on social media claiming that girls should not take #COVID19Vaccine 5 days before & after their menstrual cycle are fake.

Thus, from the above information, it is evident that the post claiming that women cannot take the vaccine during their menstrual cycle is fake.
