Its an end of an era as the Italian GoalKeeping legend Gianluigi Buffon has hung his ‘gloves’ after a heart-breaking exit for the Italian team from the Qualification round of the World Cup 2018. The Swedish Team held on to their 1-0 lead from the first game and defended their way through the second game to end it 0-0, ensuring a World Cup without the Italians after 58 Years!.
‘Gigi’ as the fans call him has had a glorious career winning almost everything there was to win. Apart from winning a lot of Serie A titles(6 in last 6 years only) and Italian Cups with Juventus FC, he will be most remembered for playing a pivotal role in Italy’s 2006 World Cup triumph.
Such was his impact on the famous Italian defence that Italy had only conceded only one goal before reaching the Final game against France. 5 clean sheets in a possible 7 games World Cup says everything about his contribution to the special victory of 2006.
He led the revival of troubled Italian team and helped them reach the Euro 2012 Finals which they lost against Spain.
The only trophy missing from Buffon’s overcrowded trophy cabinet is the UEFA Champions League, to which he came pretty close in the last couple of years with Juventus, only to be denied by the Spanish giants Barcelona(2015) and Real Madrid(2017).

Players from all around the world have poured in their good wishes and tributes to the legendary Goal Keeper, probably the best in history.
