Security forces in Belgium have successfully thwarted a terrorist attack after a suspected terrorist was shot dead by police forces at the Brussels Central train station on Tuesday night.
According to reports, the terrorist was wearing an explosive belt. Eyewitnesses at the station report of the terrorist shouting “Allahu Akbar” before detonating a separate, smaller explosive inside the station. The suspected terrorist has been identified as being a Moroccan national.
Police worked quickly to evacuate the station and the nearby area in the interest of securing the safety of civilians. The subsequent operation by security officials in neutralizing the terrorist prevented a large loss of life and property.
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said that the country would remain vigilant after the failed attack even though there was no indication of another attack taking place. The country’s interior minister also stated that Belgium had avoided a serious attack.
