The Great Bell has previously gone silent in 2007 and between 1983 and 1985 for undergoing major refurbishments. The parliamentary authorities said that stopping Big Ben is done keeping in mind the safety concerns for the workers carrying out repairs.
“This essential program of works will safeguard the clock on a long term basis, as well as protecting and preserving its home,” the clock keeper Steve Jaggs said.
However, the Big Ben will still ring on the occasion of big events such as the New Year. Big Ben stands 96ft high and is the most photographed building in the UK.
